How to Report Creator Campaign Performance to Executives and Finance
Marketing teams often have the data. What they don't always have is a clear way to translate it for the people who decide whether the budget continues.
Creator campaign reporting has a specific challenge: the numbers are less clean than paid search or paid social. Attribution is partial. Promo codes don't capture everything. Conversion windows are long. All of that nuance is real and important, but if your report leads with nuance, it sounds like you're making excuses rather than presenting results.
The goal is to present honest data in a format that leads to good decisions. That means acknowledging limitations without leading with them, showing the right metrics for the campaign's stated objectives, and giving decision-makers a clear "should we keep doing this" conclusion.
Start with the Campaign Objective
Every report should start by restating what the campaign was supposed to do. This sounds simple but it's frequently skipped, and skipping it creates friction later when the audience has a different mental model of what "success" means.
A discovery campaign designed to reach a new audience has different success metrics than a direct-response campaign designed to drive immediate purchases. If you present conversion data for a discovery campaign without restating that the goal was audience expansion, every "but what's the ROI?" question is coming because the audience is evaluating a discovery campaign against a direct-response benchmark.
One sentence is enough: "This campaign's objective was to introduce the brand to [creator's] audience of [X] subscribers who had no prior exposure to us."
The Metrics That Matter by Campaign Type
Direct-response creator campaigns (promo code + clear conversion CTA):
- Cost per attributed conversion (across all signals, not just promo codes)
- New customer rate
- Average order value vs. site-wide baseline
- Return on ad spend (total attributed revenue / campaign cost)
Discovery / awareness campaigns (reaching new audiences):
- Estimated reach and impression data from the creator
- Branded search volume change during and after the campaign
- New visitor count (tracked via vanity URL or UTM-tagged links)
- Post-purchase survey mentions in the campaign period
Consideration campaigns (retargeting existing audiences, testimonial formats):
- Traffic to specific product pages
- Conversion rate of campaign-sourced sessions vs. site average
- Assisted conversions (where the campaign appeared in the touchpoint path but wasn't last-touch)
Presenting the right metrics for the campaign type prevents the "why isn't your brand awareness campaign showing ROI" conversation.
How to Present Incomplete Attribution Data Honestly
The worst thing you can do is present promo code redemptions as if they represent total conversions. The second worst thing is to present a range so wide it has no meaning ("conversions were somewhere between 40 and 400").
A better approach: present the attributed data with an explicit methodology note and an adjustment estimate.
"Our promo code captured 88 redemptions. Based on our post-purchase survey data, which showed 22% of attributed orders mentioning this campaign across multiple channels, we estimate total campaign-driven conversions were in the range of 180-220. This aligns with the 2.0-2.5x multiplier we've seen in past campaigns between promo code data and total attribution."
That framing is honest about the estimate, shows you're not just guessing, and gives a more accurate number than the promo code count alone. It also demonstrates methodological thinking, which builds credibility over time.
The One-Page Summary Format
For executive presentations, a one-pager works better than a multi-slide deck. Executives want context, a number, and a recommendation. A one-pager forces you to include only what matters.
Structure:
Campaign summary (2-3 sentences): Creator name, campaign type, flight dates, cost.
Results (bullet points): 3-5 metrics that directly relate to the campaign objective. Include both attributed and estimated total where applicable.
Context (1-2 sentences): How this compares to previous campaigns or other channels. "This campaign's estimated CAC of $47 compares to our paid search CAC of $82 in the same period."
Attribution methodology (1 sentence): What signals you used and the known limitations. "Attribution is based on tracking link clicks, vanity URL visits, and promo code redemptions. Survey calibration applied."
Recommendation (1 sentence): Continue, scale, optimise, or discontinue. With reason.
That's it. The full data lives in your attribution dashboard. The one-pager summarizes what decision-makers need to make a call.
Handling the "Why Can't You Just Show Me the ROI" Question
This question usually comes from someone who's used to paid search or paid social reporting, where the platform hands you an ROAS number with apparent precision. The comparison feels unfair because the ROAS from paid social includes attribution inflation from those platforms, but that's a harder argument to win in the room.
The most effective response isn't to explain why creator attribution is hard. It's to show what you can measure and how it compares:
"Our promo code data shows a 2.8x ROAS on attributed conversions. Our post-purchase survey suggests total ROAS is closer to 5.5x when non-code conversions are included. We can't get to a single clean number the way Google Ads presents one, but the range we have is consistent with this channel being our most efficient acquisition source right now."
Then stop talking. A confident presentation of a range with methodology is more credible than an apology for the measurement limitations.
Showing Trend Data Over Time
Single-campaign reports are less persuasive than trend data. If you've run four campaigns with the same creator, showing performance across all four, with improvement over time, is a much stronger case for renewal than one campaign's numbers.
Trend data does several things: it shows you're tracking consistently (which builds data credibility), it shows whether the channel is improving or declining (which is relevant for budget decisions), and it demonstrates a relationship with the creator that has yielded learning over time.
"We've run four podcast campaigns with this show. CAC has decreased from $112 to $58 over four campaigns as we've improved the offer and creative. The audience converts at 2x our site average." That's a compelling case for continued investment that no single-campaign report can make.
When the Numbers Don't Support the Investment
Sometimes the honest conclusion is that a campaign didn't justify the cost. Presenting this clearly is also important.
Credibility in reporting comes from accurate bad news as much as accurate good news. If you present every campaign as a success, leadership will eventually discount your attribution data as inherently self-serving. If you show a campaign that underperformed, explain why (audience mismatch, wrong attribution window, creative issue), and describe what you'd change, you demonstrate that the measurement process actually works.
The goal is for attribution data to drive better decisions, not to justify past ones. That means sometimes reporting numbers that support less spending, not more. Teams that do this build trust in their data. Teams that only report winners eventually get their entire attribution framework questioned.
Honest reporting in bad times is what makes the data meaningful in good times.
